The film
I Miss Mam is the second edition of films created by the talented students of our Film Club — written and directed by the students themselves, and made on smartphones.
We are delighted to celebrate this work, and the recognition it has received from the Tees Valley International Film Festival as Best Smartphone Films. It is a wonderful achievement for the students, whose creativity, dedication and storytelling brought it to life.
The filmmakers
Written and directed by the students
The storytelling came from the students themselves — they wrote it, they directed it, and they found the story worth telling. This is their work and their credits.
Our part was to give them the space, the support and the encouragement to make it, and then to help put the finished film in front of an audience.
The format
Made on the phone in their pocket
The film was shot on smartphones — the camera the students already had with them. No expensive kit and no excuses: an idea, a group of young people with something to say, and the discipline to get it filmed.
That is the whole point. A smartphone is the most accessible camera there is, and it puts the same opportunity in front of anyone with a story.
The recognition
Best Smartphone Films at the festival
The Tees Valley International Film Festival selected the film as Best Smartphone Films — a wonderful achievement for the students, and recognition of their creativity, dedication and storytelling.
It also says something about the work coming out of this region: films made by young people in Teesside, standing alongside work from much further afield.
What it means
Confidence, opportunity and a platform
I Miss Mam represents the power of young voices, the importance of creative opportunities, and the impact of giving emerging filmmakers the confidence and platform to share their stories.
At Smoggie Bloom we are incredibly proud and honoured to showcase their work, celebrate their achievement, and support the next generation of filmmakers.
“Young voices. Powerful stories. Big-screen dreams.”
The Film Club
Where it starts
The Film Club
The Film Club is where this work begins: young people in Teesside writing, shooting and finishing their own films, with the students taking the credits themselves. I Miss Mam is the second edition — and, as the students put it, this is just the beginning.

Congratulations to the students
Their hard work deserves to be celebrated. If you would like to support the Film Club, offer a placement, or help us put these films in front of more audiences, we would love to hear from you.
