The series

We are currently in the final stages of post-production on Head Kandy: Beyond the Chair, a reality series following Janine and John, the owners of Head Kandy, and their staff as they navigate the day-to-day life of the salon.

It is a place where a client can walk in for a blow-dry while, two chairs down, someone is being fitted for a hair replacement system that will change how they face the world. The kettle never stops, the appointment book never stops, and neither do the stories.

Why we made it

Expertise you would not expect on a high street

We initially decided to make the series because we were fascinated not only by the level of expertise within Head Kandy, but by the people themselves. There are some incredibly specialised treatments taking place, including hair replacement and wigs, alongside high-level skincare.

That work matters. For a client losing their hair through illness, treatment or genetics, the chair is not a luxury — it is the point at which they start to feel like themselves again. Filming those moments with care has shaped everything about how the series is put together.

The characters

It was the people that drew us in

Ultimately, though, it was the characters that drew us in. The staff are an incredibly diverse group of people with huge personalities and some brilliant stories.

There is a recovering addict who now manages the salon. There are women who have dealt with long-term illnesses and gone on to help others overcome severe acne. There are sisters who can be fighting like cat and dog one minute and completely inseparable the next.

They are funny, warm, complicated and, most importantly, real. We genuinely believe there is an entertaining and human series here with strong audience appeal.

The approach

Observational, warm, and never sneering

We shoot in the salon as it actually runs — long days, small crews, minimal interference. Nobody is set up to look foolish. The comedy comes from the room, not from the edit taking cheap shots at people who trusted us with their story.

Because development, shooting and post all happen under one roof at Smoggie Bloom, the team cutting the series is the same team that stood in the salon. Nothing gets handed to a stranger halfway through.

They’re funny, warm, complicated and, most importantly, real.
