The documentary
Our second project is a documentary following Grangetown Netball Club and its remarkable journey.
The senior performance squad competes in England Netball Premier 1 — the highest national club division — and this season finished 5th in the country.
The team
Competing with the best in the country
The squad includes players representing or connected to international teams including England, Wales, Jamaica and the USA, as well as players competing at Super League level.
The team is coached by Geraldine Williams, a Level 3 coach who has devoted a huge part of her life to developing players at Grangetown. The club’s success is very much a reflection of her commitment and dedication.
What makes the story particularly compelling is that this is a club based in Grangetown, competing against some of the best-established netball clubs in the country.
The pathway
It starts at four years old
The pathway starts incredibly young, with teams from U16, U14 and U12 right down to children aged four. The U16 and U14 sides are currently No. 1 in the North East and ranked in the national top 10.
The performance squad trains four nights a week, with matches at weekends, and the commitment from the players, coaches and families is enormous.
The story
More than sport
Based at Grangetown Boys Club, we feel there’s a much bigger story here than simply sport. It’s about community, ambition, young people and what can be achieved when people are given the opportunity.
This is a positive story about a corner of Teesside rarely shown on screen — powered by community spirit, athletic ambition and the leadership of women who make things happen.
